Breaking the barriers: Addressing adolescent mental health
The George Institute for Global Health in association with Empower. Transform. Inspire (ETI) is hosting a webinar on “Breaking the barriers: Addressing adolescent mental health”. The webinar will focus on the major issues which impact the mental well-being of adolescents in India. It will attempt to look at the structural challenges already existing in India and how the COVID-19 pandemic affects the current population further.
Prolonged isolation and exponential rise in internet usage due to pandemic protocols could result in a variety of issues for adolescents. Feelings of loneliness due to reduced peer support and limitation to virtual means is a major cause of concern. Following COVID – 19 protocols such as constant hand washing, wearing a mask when stepping out of homes and maintaining social distancing, added to the stress faced especially by younger adolescents. Other concerns include the anxiety and uncertainty over academic and professional futures when one keeps in mind the current economic situation of the pandemic.
With a definite purpose to bring mental health challenges faced by adolescents to the forefront, the webinar will discuss how they were heightened during COVID and will reflect on the policy suggestions for improvement.
