Inspired by the African Philosophy of Ubuntu, the 'Tea with Africa' Series, our regular forum for interacting with African scholars, has been renamed the Ubuntu-Inspired Reflective Series. This new name emphasises the importance of embracing relationality and accountability in the way we engage African scholars and their communities.

About the Ubuntu-Inspired Reflective Series

The 'Ubuntu-Inspired Reflective Series' is part of The George Institute's efforts to promote global health collaboration with African researchers, institutions, and communities. Each event allows for the exchange of knowledge between African and non-African researchers. Participants are encouraged to share their unique challenges and solutions, as well as discuss the implications for different regions. Those who wish to contribute more or connect with others are encouraged to share contact information and/or send event reflections for possible inclusion in the event wrap-up blog.

  • Dr. Derbew Fikadu Berhe

    Dr. Derbew Fikadu Berhe is a Clinical Pharmacologist with a strong background in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies within clinical and public health research. He is an experienced educator in pharmacology and currently serves as a Lead Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Rwanda. In his postdoctoral role, Dr. Derbew is managing  a four-year NIHR-funded Equi-Injury project. As faculty at UGHE, he teaches MBBS and MHGD students.

    Dr. Derbew's research interests lie in equitable global health, with a particular focus on non-communicable diseases and the strategic use of data to inform effective policy decisions.

  • Kéfilath Bello

    Kéfilath Bello is a Medical Doctor, with a Masters of Public Health. She is currently a researcher and the head of the health policy and systems department at the “Centre for Research in Human Reproduction and Demography” (CERRHUD) in Benin, She is completing a PhD at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), Antwerp and the KU Leuven in Belgium. Her work focuses in promoting evidence-informed decision-making for improving access and quality of Primary Health Care services. She is currently involved in activities supporting several African countries’ efforts for achieving Universal Health Coverage, with specific attention on Primary Health care workforce, stakeholders’ collaboration, political economy, gender and equity, and effective implementation of health policies

  • Dr Laura Downey

    Dr Laura Downey leads the George Institute’s global program for Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and is a conjoint senior lecturer in health economics and policy in the school of population health at the University of New South Wales Australia, and an advanced research fellow in health systems science at the School of Public Health at Imperial College London. Her research is focused broadly on evaluating health system performance in relation to UHC goals and developing innovative solutions to support equitable access to high quality, affordable care for the world’s most at-risk populations. Dr Downey has worked with government, multilateral, and academic collaborators in numerous countries across Asia and Africa to support improvements in evidence-based health policy for prioritising scarce health resources and enhancing quality of care delivery. She has held research and policy positions at the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) UK, University College London (UCL) UK, Imperial College London UK, and the University of New South Wales, Australia.

    Dr Deepika Saluja is the Thought Leadership Advisor and Program Manager for the Ubuntu Initiative at The George Institute for Global Health.

    Deepika holds a PhD in Public Health Policy from the IIM Ahmedabad, India. With an interdisciplinary background in science, management, and policy degrees, her interests span across different areas of public health including healthcare for the frontline workforce, SRH, mental health, and legislations for strengthening accountability. Deepika holds widespread experience in consulting with various national and international development sector organisations and writes extensively on her experiences. Dr Saluja is an Emerging Voice for Global Health (EV4GH 2016), co-founder and current chair of the Women in Global Health India Chapter, and a strong advocate of bringing diversity, equity and inclusion in all spaces.
