Chair takes on future leadership role at The George Institute
SYDNEY, OCT 1 - Mr David Armstrong, current acting Chairman of the Board at The George Institute for Global Health, has been appointed to the role of Chairman, it was announced today.
Mr Armstrong, who first joined The George Institute Board in Sept 2014, has over 30 years of experience in professional services, including as a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
Professor Robyn Norton, Co-founder and Principal Director at The George Institute commented:
“Over his five years with The George, David has demonstrated a real passion, interest and enthusiasm for the impactful research we do, and has developed a deep understanding of our finances and social enterprise activities.”
“As interim chair – a position he has held since late March - David has shown himself to be a thoughtful and dedicated leader of the board and we are delighted that he has now accepted the role as permanent Chair.”
With the world facing a pandemic of chronic diseases such as heart and respiratory diseases, stroke, and kidney disease, there is increasing demand for new treatments and ways to manage these conditions, driven by a growing ageing population and lack of access to appropriate medical treatments and services globally.
“As we celebrate our 20 year anniversary this year, we are looking at new and innovative ways to deliver on our mission to improve the health of millions of people worldwide,” added Professor Norton.
“We have set ourselves ambitious goals over the next five years around better care, better treatments and healthier societies and are looking to maximise our impact on improving health through advocacy and thought leadership as well as disruptive entrepreneurship. Achieving these goals will inevitably require organisational growth, with a larger and more diverse revenue stream.”
“With David’s significant knowledge and understanding of banking and capital markets, as well reporting, regulatory and risk challenges, we feel he is the right person to support us on this journey.”
In addition to his role at The George Institute, Mr Armstrong is a Non-Executive Director of the National Australia Bank (since August 2014) and Chair of its Risk and Audit Committees. He is also a Director of the Opera Australia Capital Fund Limited (since May 2013), President of the Australian Museum, and a Trustee of the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation (since April 2014).
Mr Armstrong holds a Bachelor of Business, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
