Happy New Year 2019
As the year 2018 draws to an end and we will soon embrace the year of Pig, The George Institute, China would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation for your continued trust and steady support for our research work.
During the past year, we have expanded our program of conducting high quality and impactful scientific research under the guidance of Beijing Municipal Health Commission, whilst propelling collaborations with government sectors, universities, scientific research institutes, and other NGOs. Adhering to the values of “humanitarian commitment, focus on excellence, creativity, integrity, ‘can do’ approach and emphasis on impact”, we are committed to improving the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide through innovative health research.
In 2018, The George Institute China has achieved:
- An increase in high quality major scientific research reports, with 44 articles published in SCI journals, including 1 in NEJM, 2 in Lancet, 1 in Lancet Neurology, and researchers have given eight international presentations.
- Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Computational Health Informatics (CHI) Group of the University of Oxford. This collaboration focuses on the areas of digital health, big data and artificial intelligence in healthcare, with the aim of building multidisciplinary capacity, and supporting the advancement of human health.
- Officially achieved a cooperative intention with China Center for Health Education. The two parties will work together to safeguard and enhance the health of people, actively transfer scientific health-care knowledge, and improve national health literacy.
- Co-organized the High-level Symposium on Falls Prevention amongst Older People in China with the National Center for Chronic and Noncommunicable Disease Control and Prevention (NCNCD) of China CDC. Domestic and foreign experts from relevant fields proposed strategies and suggestions for establishing and improving relevant policies, and in particular, of sustainable systematic fall prevention services incorporating technology and quality evidence.
- Co-organized the academic forum, ‘Healthcare, People and Media – Healthy China Initiative and the Multiple Approaches to Health Communication’ and the health communication workshop ‘Discussion from the Perspective of New Media’, with the School of Journalism and Communication of Peking University to inspire cross-disciplinary dialog and explore greater perspectives for healthcare research.
- Propelled capacity building efforts for Chinese researchers, whilst maintaining our commitment to research into major chronic diseases. We held our first China-Australia Alumni Reception of Chinese researchers who have undertaken training at The George Institute for Global Health Australia. Approximately 30 doctors with a wide range of disciplines expertise from across China who have spent significant time at The George Institute for Global Health headquarters in Sydney, Australia, gathered to reconnect with old friends, forge new friendships, share experiences, and gain new insights into health and medical research.
- Launched the multi-center HITFIT project (a prospective observational study for hip fracture), and undertook several large-scale research programs, including INTERACT3 study (INTEnsive care bundle with blood pressure reduction in Acute Cerebral hemorrhage Trial study); Action on Salt China; ROADMAP (Road to hierarchical diabetes management at primary care settings in China); SSaSS (China Salt Substitute and Stroke Study); and the free smartphone application FoodSwitch and SMARTHealth Diabetes study implemented by The China Center for mHealth Innovation (CCmHI), are also well underway and have made good progress.
- In 2018, The George Institute for Global Health was ranked the top independent research organisation in Australia, and come in at 33rd overall in the world. The review of the world’s non-university and non-commercial research organisations was produced for Times Higher Education and is based on field-weighted citation impact (FWCI). In addition, The George Institute for Global Health has been designated a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre in Injury Prevention and Trauma Care.
- Researchers of The George Institute China also gained professional recognition in their research fields. The Lancet, one of the premier medical journals in the world, profiled Professor Craig Anderson, Executive Director of The George Institute China, acknowledging him "a front-runner in stroke research". Moreover, Dr Lily Song, Head of Stroke, and Dr Maoyi Tian, Head of Digital Health, were successfully awarded Emerging Leaders by the World Heart Federation (WHF).
These accomplishments would not have been possible without your support and guidance. If you would like to learn more about our research, follow us at WeChat or Weibo @乔治全球健康研究院
