Distinguished Fellow Professor Corinna Hawkes takes up prestigious new role with the UN

Doctor Corinna Hawkes, Distinguished Fellow with The George Institute since 2019, has stepped down from this appointment to take up the role of Director, Division of Food Systems and Food Safety at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome.

Dr Hawke’s exceptional career in food policy and research has inspired many, led to numerous sector improvements, and helped inform policies to reduce diet-related ill health.

During Prof Hawke’s time with The George Institute, she was the keynote speaker for our first food policy event in the UK, 'Creating healthy, sustainable, city food environments'. Her involvement was an integral component of strengthening understanding of local and global food policy and food systems. She went on to highlight the importance of putting lived experience at the heart of urban food policy in the film ‘Learning from the London Child Obesity Taskforce’.

Prof Hawkes continued to share her expertise generously over the years, both informally and through meetings and opinion pieces. We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with her and learn from her passion for making a difference in people’s lives, and changing how we eat for the better health of people and the planet. We look forward to following Prof Hawkes’ progress in this next important role.
