Sharing our injury research during the Safety 2018 World Conference
The George Institute for Global Health presented research at the Safety 2018 World Conference on our drowning prevention projects in India and Bangladesh, on preventing falls for older people, and the Young Lives study.
Dr Margie Peden took part in a discussion on what needs to be done to advance injury and violence prevention to achieve the sustainable development goals.
Dr Jagnoor Jagnoor, Head of Injury Division at The George Institute, India also read out the Safety 2018 declaration on drowning, highlighting how 90% of the world’s drowning deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and that low-cost interventions need to be scaled up.
About the Safety 2018 World Conference
Inspired by the SDG commitments, World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion 2018 was convened in November 5-7, 2018 in Bangkok with the following objectives:
- To share knowledge, experience, good practices, successful and non-successful stories, challenges of injury prevention and safety promotion in responses to SDGs.
- To promote safety and non-violence in all policies, and advocate effective multi-sectoral actions for safety and non-violence.
- To build and strengthen a global community of practice in order to promote safety and prevention of violence agenda worldwide.
The Conference was hosted by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, and co-hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEM) and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation.
