World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims: 18 November 2018
This year’s theme for 'World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims' highlights that roads have stories – and so many of those stories are tragic.
This year alone, more than 1.3 million people have lost their lives on the world’s roads, and tens of millions more have been injured. Children on their journeys to and from school are particularly vulnerable. For older school-age children and adolescents, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death.
We must use this World Day of Remembrance as a platform, to take action to reduce this huge burden of unnecessary suffering - particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where most of these road deaths and injuries take place. We need urgent investment, not just in better quality roads, but also in better urban planning and greener, sustainable transportation options.
The George Institute is part of the Child Health Initiative, which recently launched a toolkit that provides guidance for protecting children to and from their journey to school.
We hope that the simple, affordable steps it sets out will help public authorities and others save countless young lives in future.
How you can help?
This World Day of Remembrance, let’s act. We owe it to the many millions of road crash victims, and to their loved ones, who suffer so much. Let’s not wait for any more tragic stories to unfold.
