The ﬁrst World Health Organization global report on diabetes found that the number of adults living with diabetes almost quadrupled to 422 million adults from 1980 to 2014. Low and middle-income countries were the hardest hit with this disease and other NCDs
To address the growing burden of diabetes around the world, The George Institute, China established a diabetes research program in 2011. Currently it is conducting several large-scale clinical research programs funded by international and domestic supporters. Accumulated funds are approximately 70,000,000 RMB. In China alone, more than 380 hospitals have been involved in the programs, with more than 250,000 participants taking part in research projects.
